What I would like to talk about is food. Food, food, glorious food. And I don't mean fast food or huge portions of food, but real FOOD. The kind that crunches when you bite it and leaves you satisfied after a simple portion. The kind that is sweet in the summer and harder to find in the winter. The kind of food that requires taking a little more time to find and prepare, but is well worth the extra energy, and which can have a higher up front price tag, but can save loads in public health and environmental costs.
Today, like most Sundays, Pablo and I went to our local farmer's market, where I've been trying to do more and more of my weekly shopping these days. We had already been getting a weekly stock from local farmer's markets since we moved back to DC (oh how I miss that year round mercado a block from our place in Mexico!), but since reading The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan, I've really been trying to change the way I shop and eat. I won't repeat all the gory details here about how badly the industrial food system is hurting our planet, our bodies, and our culture - you can read the book yourself, and I recommend you do.
I will say that I've made it a goal to shift the balance in our shopping so that the majority of what we buy and eat comes as locally and as fresh as possible, while the grocery store is more of a back up for the staples and other things not available anywhere else. And I think it's already paying off. I've not checked our health or carbon footprint lately, but just look how happy this kid is eating those scrumptious summer peaches and blackberries!

Adorable pictures! Can't wait to see you both in a few weeks. I was in awe of that book - I actually bought an extra copy so that I could lend it out more easily to other people. There was so much good info in it - I need to read it about 4 more times! I wish you lived close to us - we are giving away fresh organic veggies every week b/c we are getting so much from the CSA we belong to.
Missing those good meals you fixed while here..
Love, Mom
