Buckeyes in Mexico

What do a group of young people from a small town in Ohio have in common with a group of young people from a small town in Mexico? They spent the day together playing futbol, eating and drinking pulque, and talking about some of the things that they care about. And maybe that's a pretty good start.

Alberto and I spent the day in Calpulalpan with a group of young people in the community working to raise environmental awareness and implement ecological projects and a group of students from Wilmington College. Between them the groups included an international politics professor, a young Iraq veteran, two sisters studying Spanish, a young woman studying tourism, three brothers working on environmental projects, a radical scientific Marxist studying economics, a father with an undocumented Mexican son-in-law in Ohio, a mathematics teacher, a class clown with a drinking problem, an aspiring architect, a guy nicknamed The Eagle, and two very social dogs.

We helped arrange the encuentro through the Casa and I already have plans to invite the Mexican group to come visit and help us start a compost. Hopefully the Ohio connection will continue as well. The Wilmington College group comes to Mexico each year on a trip led by some old friends from other Quaker connections. Funny how worlds can collide, and open, in a small town in Mexico.
