Rest Day

Happy International Workers Day! It's one of those holidays that the rest of the world celebrates but the U.S. ignores. In fact, we have the day off here in Mexico, and we're taking full advantage. Slept till 9, went for a long run, made pancakes, and are now moving into afternoon nap time.

Rest is something I'm not very good at (as you can see by the fact that I feel compelled to write on my blog since I have nothing else to do). But I'm trying to improve.

Stop moving. Let go of the To Do list. Turn off the computer.

All easier said than done for us goal-oriented norteamericanos. Mexicans, well they're much better at it. Take Alberto for instance, asleep on the couch, not a worry in the world about what needs to get done or what he should be doing that would be more productive. When it's time to rest, he dedicates himself fully to it.

It's part of that here and now focus that distinguishes Latin American culture from Anglo culture. We're always planning, plotting, organizing, preparing, while they're chatting, visiting, enjoying, resting. I can complain and bitch as much as I want about Mexicans not following through with plans or doing what they said they would do, but when it comes to rest days, I've got a lot to learn.

So now, stop moving. Let go of the To Do list. Turn off the computer.

We need to help each other. I'm great at the resting stuff. It's the "getting things done" parts I struggle with. Our household has perfected the art of napping.
