Life has a way of interrupting our busy schedules and reminding us what's important.
Alberto's grandmother died today. She passed away in her sleep early in the morning. She'd been very sick for some time, and Alberto's dad had been spending a lot of time caring for her. The last time we saw her, about a month or so ago, she was a shadow of the person she'd been, even smaller and frailer than before, unable to get out of bed or speak or feed herself. But she smiled when we introduced her to Pablo, and we had wanted to bring him again to see her. In fact, we were planning to go visit her today, to see her before we leave Mexico. But Alberto's mom called in the morning to give us the news. And so, as happens, life interrupted.
It's odd the sense of calm and simplicity that takes over when someone dies. All the other trivial or even not so trivial things going on in your life just fall away for a time. Nothing else matters but tending to the arrangements, being with family, and honoring the person that has passed. Life becomes very focused and clear.
So, Alberto spent the day with his family in Cuernavaca helping arrange things for the viewing and funeral, and tomorrow we'll go to the service and burial. And everything else can wait for a time.

Alberto and Bridget:
So sorry to hear about your Grandmother's passing.
I know the family appreciates your still being there for all the help you can be to them, Alberto.
My prayers and thoughts are with your family ...
Love you both,
Mom
So sorry to hear about your loss. It is good that you are still there in Mexico, since I know how close you both are to his family.
Tell Alberto he and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Love you!
Bridget, hi.
I'm so sorry about your loss. It sounds as though you both will miss your Abuela.
But thanks for the simple clarity of your writing about this transition and what it means for your lives.
Comfort and strength to you all!
Thanks everyone for all your messages.
