A Referral

So, we get a call at the Casa this week. It's another couple that has been deported from the U.S. The woman sounds American, perhaps she came with her husband when he was found without papers and sent back to Mexico. They're looking for work, staying with some distant family.

"I'm so sorry, we don't have much to offer. How did you hear about us?" I ask.
"The U.S. embassy gave us your number."
"The U.S. embassy?!" That's a new one.
"Yes. They suggested we call you."
"Did they say why? What they thought we might be able to offer?"
"No. We just went to them looking for help and they gave us this number."

So now it appears the U.S. government is referring people to us to try to fix the problems created by their own flawed policies! Brilliant. It may be time for a visit to the embassy.
